Reading: In 2nd grade, we make the transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn". We still work on phonics skills but we also read fiction stories and non-fiction informational articles. In fiction, we focus on setting, characters, beginning, middle, and end, main idea, sequence of events, and making inferences. In non-fiction, we focus on headings, captions, graphics, photos, and sidebars. We also find the main idea and supporting details.
Spelling: We focus on spelling common 2nd grade level words following basic phonics rules.
Language: We will be working on learning parts of speech (nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, contractions, and sentences).
Writing: We will be working on writing "good" sentences, and paragraphs (friendly letters, expository, persuasive, and narratives). We will be working on making sure what we write makes sense.
Math: We will be sure to memorize our addition and subtraction facts so that we can complete 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction. We learn to tell time to the minute and understand am and pm. We learn to measure using inches, feet, and yards, and also using centimeters and meters. We learn to read various types of graphs and to make our own graphs after gathering data. We learn about 2 and 3 dimensional shapes. Finally, we learn to count money and make change.
Science: We focus on living and non-living things in various habitats: oceans, deserts, rain forests, and deciduous/coniferous forests. We learn about the food chains, water cycle, electricity, sound, and what steps are in the scientific process.
Social Studies: We learn about communities and neighborhoods, maps, the compass rose, map keys, inventors (past and present), and how things change over time.
Religion: This is a special year: two Sacraments! First Reconciliation will take place in early December. First Communion will take place in late April and early May (after Easter). Students study both here and through the Faith Formation program. More information will be sent home in September to let you know what the requirements and special dates are.
We also learn about the 10 Commandments, the Great Commandments, and review how to love and serve God in many ways. We have monthly service projects and activities along with school wide events during Advent and Lent.
